Polynesian Rat

$68.51

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles The Polynesian Rat, or Pacific Rat (Rattus exulans), known to the Mori as kiore, is the third most widespread species of rat in the world behind the Brown Rat and Black Rat. The Polynesian Rat originates in Southeast Asia but, like its cousins, has become well travelled infiltrating Fiji and most Polynesian islands, including New Zealand, Easter Island and Hawaii. It shares the ability to easily adapt to many different types of environments, from grasslands to forests. Its habits are also similar, becoming closely associated with humans because of the easy access to food. As a result it has become a major pest in almost all areas within its distribution. "Typee: A Peep at Polynesian Life" was Herman Melville’s first novel. Originally published in 1846, "Typee" was partially based on Melville’s own experiences as a beachcomber in the South Pacific Marquesas Islands. A romanticized travelogue of the Pacific island paradise Nuku Hiva, "Typee" is the story of Tommo, a Yankee sailor and his four month stay on the island. One of Melville’s most popular works during his lifetime, "Typee" gives the reader a captivating look into the cultures and traditions of the natives living in the islands of the South Pacific.

Island Plant Conservation

Island Plant Conservation

$154.53

An integrated approach to island conservation was applied on Pitcairn Island, to assist with the development of informed conservation programmes. Initial field studies collected data on the flora and vegetation communities found on the island. Nonnative species were found throughout, but native species dominated in the remoter valleys on the south of the island. Species on the Pitcairn group are most closely related to the Austral group of Islands, and sit within the Southeast Polynesian biogeographic region. A conservation assessment showed that 63 of the native flora was threatened on Pitcairn, while 22 was globally threatened. Threats to the flora were found to be through invasive species competition, habitat loss and loss of genetic diversity within species. Detailed population genetic assessments were carried out where genetic diversity data was needed for developing species conservation plans. The collated data were then combined to identify areas which could be successfully selected as reserve areas to conserve the largest number of rare species and native vegetation communities, without impinging on the activities and needs of the islanders. Easter Island: Giant Stone Statues Tell of a Rich and Tragic Past

Easter Island: Giant Stone Statues Tell of a Rich and Tragic Past

$3.46

In about A.D. 400, a group of seafarers reached a small, isolated island in Polynesia and founded a new settlement. They developed a rich and complex culture that lasted more than a thousand years. The population eventually declined, and soon all that remained were a few inhabitants and hundreds of mysterious giant stone statues in varying stages of disrepair. Caroline Arnold explains how archeologists and other scientists and scholars have pieced together a history of Easter Island by studying its natural resources, listening to family stories and Polynesian legends, and examining the statues and other clues the people left behind. Photographs, taken by the author, provide a stunning visual accompaniment to this clear and concise account of one of the most remote–and fascinating–places on earth. GLOSSARY, BIBLIOGRAPHY, INDEX.

Excerpt: Arthur Lyman (February 2, 1932 February 24, 2002) was an American jazz vibraphone and marimba player. His group popularized a style of faux-Polynesian music during the 1950s and 1960s which later became known as exotica . His albums became favorite stereo-effect demonstration discs during the early days of the stereophonic LP album for their elaborate and colorful percussion, deep bass and 3-dimensional recording soundstage. Lyman was known as “the King of Lounge music .” Biography Arthur Lyman was born on the island of Oahu in the U.S. territory of Hawaii, the youngest of eight children of a Hawaiian mother and a father of Hawaiian, French, Belgian and Chinese extraction. When Arthur’s father, a land surveyor, lost his eyesight in an accident on Kauai, the family moved to the island of Oahu and settled in Makiki , a section of Honolulu . Arthur’s father was very strict with him, each day after school locking him in a room with orders to play along to a stack of Benny Goodman records “to learn what good music is.” “I had a little toy marimba,” Lyman later recalled, “a sort of bass xylophone , and from those old 78 rpm disks I learned every note Lionel Hampton recorded with the Goodman group.” He became adept at the 4-mallet style of playing which produces a fuller sound. He became good enough to turn professional at age 14 when he joined a group called the Gadabouts, playing vibes in the cool-jazz style then in vogue. “I was working at Leroy’s, a little nightclub down by Kakaako . I was making about $60 a week, working Monday to Saturday, from

Native Men Remade: Refashioning Gender in Contemporary Hawaii

Native Men Remade: Refashioning Gender in Contemporary Hawaii

$23.95

Many indigenous Hawaiian men have felt profoundly disempowered by the legacies of colonization and by the tourist industry, which, in addition to occupying a great deal of land, promotes a feminized image of Native Hawaiians (evident in the ubiquitous figure of the dancing hula girl). In the 1990s a group of Native men on the island of Maui responded by refashioning and reasserting their masculine identities in a group called the Hale Mua (the “Men’s House”). As a member and an ethnographer, Ty P. Kawika Tengan analyzes how the group’s mostly middle-aged, middle-class, and mixed-race members assert a warrior masculinity through practices including martial arts, woodcarving, and cultural ceremonies. Some of their practices are heavily influenced by or borrowed from other indigenous Polynesian traditions, including those of the Maori. The men of the Hale Mua enact their refashioned identities as they participate in temple rites, protest marches, public lectures, and cultural fairs. The sharing of personal stories is an integral part of Hale Mua fellowship, and Tengan’s account is filled with members’ first-person narratives. At the same time, Tengan explains how Hale Mua rituals and practices connect to broader projects of cultural revitalization and Hawaiian nationalism. He brings to light the tensions that mark the group’s efforts to reclaim indigenous masculinity as they arise in debates over nineteenth-century historical source materials and during political and cultural gatherings held in spaces designated as tourist sites. He explores class status anxieties expressed through the sharing of individual life stories, critiques of the Hale Mua registered by Hawaiian women, and challenges the group received in dialogues with other indigenous Polynesians. Native Men Remade is the fascinating story of how gender, culture, class, and personality intersect as a group of indigenous Hawaiian men work to overcome the dislocations of colonial history.

Excerpt: Rotuman, also referred to as Rotunan, Rutuman or Fäeag Rotuma, is an Austronesian language spoken by the indigenous people of the South Pacific island group of Rotuma, an island with a Polynesian-influenced culture that was incorporated as a dependency into the Colony of Fiji in 1881. Classification of Rotuman is difficult due to the large number of loan words from Samoan and Tongan, as a result of much cultural exchange over the history of the Pacific. Research by Andrew Pawley seems to indicate however that the language is related to the West Fijian languages, and may be grouped with it in a West FijianRotuman branch of the Central Pacific sub-group of Oceanic languages. The Rotuman language has sparked much interest with linguists because the language utilises metathesis to invert the ultimate vowel with the immediately preceding consonant, resulting in a vowel system characterized by umlaut, vowel shortening or extending and diphthongisation. Unusual compared to its Pacific neighbours, Rotuman is typically considered an AVO (Agent Verb Object) Language. Rotuman has no phonemic vowel length and is underlyingly a language of open syllables. Thus, only consonant + vowel syllables exist in the underlying syllable structure, although phonological processes provide for more variatio… More:

Aus Wikipedia. Nicht dargestellt. Auszug: Samoa (help·info), officially the Independent State of Samoa (formerly known as Western Samoa and German Samoa), is a country governing the western part of the Samoan Islands in the South Pacific Ocean. It became independent from New Zealand in 1962. The two main islands of Samoa are Upolu and one of the biggest islands in Polynesia Savai’i. The capital city Apia and Faleolo International Airport are situated on the island of Upolu. Samoa was admitted to the United Nations on 15 December 1976. The entire island group, inclusive of American Samoa, was called Navigators Islands by European explorers before the 20th century because of the Samoans’ seafaring skills. The Samoans originated from Austronesian predecessors during the terminal eastward Lapita expansion period from Southeast Asia and Melanesia approximately 1500 BCE. The Samoan origins are currently being reassessed due to new scientific evidence and carbon dating findings from 2003 and onwards. Intimate sociocultural and genetic ties were maintained between the eastern Lapita colonies and the archaeological record supports oral tradition and native genealogies that indicate inter-island voyaging and intermarriage between prehistoric Samoans, Fijians, and Tongans.
