Polynesian Islands

Bora Bora – A Polynesian Shangri La   by Nadine Lloyd

Bora Bora which can be found in the Society Islands, is Tahiti’s most prized possession. This real Polynesian island shangri la is what visitors around the globe consider to be the ultimate tropical vacation location.

Hollywood and film industries from most other bits of the world have never grown tired of capturing its impressive topography. Potentially its most classic landmarks are the twin towers of black rock and an azure lagoon of clearest tropical water. Considering the perfect location and nature of this island getaway, it is not actually surprising that water sports like water skiing, para-sailing and deep sea fishing feature prominently among the things to do there.

In response to the possibilities, many enterprising vacation experts have given incomparable facilities to enjoy these types of activities at virtually any budget. And Bora Bora’s impressive natural beauty is a long way from shallow and skin deep. The world underneath its waves makes it the ideal play ground for professional and newbie underwater diving fans too.

Recreational tourism aside, Bora Bora is also among the planet’s mythical backdrops for freshly baked love. Newlyweds who select the island for their honeymoon will have something to treasure, discuss and reminisce about for the remainder of their lives. Regardless of the high in-flow of travelers each year, Bora Bora has been able to avoid the disordered, inexpensive boardwalk culture that one tends to associate with beach and island resorts nearer to home.

There is nothing tacky about Bora Bora. It is very well connected by sea and air and reaching it has a captivating visual experience that is as fantastic as having your holiday on shore. Good internal transport guarantees the complete wealth of Bora Bora’s elegance is available for a visitor’s inspection and pleasure.

Unlike plenty of other resort destinations of this sort, Bora Bora is some distance away from the hustle and bustle of main line life. It has a superb infrastructure to support the must haves of modern living facilities, banking facilities and so on while also keeping all of its individuality and charm.

The Polynesian Rat originates in Southeast Asia but, like its cousins, has become well travelled infiltrating Fiji and most Polynesian islands, including New Zealand, Easter Island and Hawaii. It shares the ability to easily adapt to many different types of environments, from grasslands to forests. Its habits are also similar, becoming closely associated with humans because of the easy access to food. As a result it has become a major pest in almost all areas within its distribution. $114.71

This is an archaeological perspective on the elaborate system of chiefdoms found in the islands of Polynesia. While the growth and development of complex social and political systems in this region have long interested anthropologists and ethnographers, the islands rich sources of archaeological data have since been exploited. The author combines this fresh archaeological data with comparative ethnographic and linguistic materials to present an innovative and perceptive account of the processes of culture change in the islands over three millennia. Using comparative ethnography, lexical reconstruction and direct archaeological evidence, the author reconstructs the broad outlines of Ancestral Polynesian Society, from which the diverse societies of the Polynesian region descended. Major processes of cultural change are analysed in detail, including colonization, adaptation to changing environments, development of intensive production and social conflict and competition. The French Polynesian Dive Guide

The French Polynesian Dive Guide

$28.94

French Polynesia, a sweeping cluster of archipelagoes tossed into the Pacific Ocean like a handful of pearls, is the dream of millions of tourists and thousands of divers. The clearness of its waters, the richness of its sea-beds, and the diversity of its sea flora and fauna make it an underwater paradise. Coral or volcanic atolls, the 115 islands that make up French Polynesia, take up an area of 1,900 by 1,500 miles between the equator and the tropic of Capricorn, 2,500 miles to the east of Australia. With detailed, three-dimensional drawings and spectacular photographs, the volume describes the most fascinating dives in this archipelago at the world’s end. Divers will find information on the characteristics and topography of the region, on its flora and fauna, on the organization of the dives themselves, on safety precautions, as well as much other highly useful information. The book also contains a section dedicated to the protection of the underwater world. With intricate drawings and tables, the appendix explores the main species that live in the archipelago, making it easy to identify the inhabitants of the reefs.

Typee (1846; in full: Typee: A Peep at Polynesian Life) is American writer Herman Melville's first book, partly based on his actual experiences as a "beachcomber" on Nuku Hiva (which Melville spelled as Nukuheva) in the South Pacific Marquesas Islands and the title comes from a valley there called Tai Pi Vai. It was Melville's most popular work during his lifetime; for 19th century readers his career seemed to go downhill afterwards, but during the early 20th century it was seen as just the beginning of a career that peaked with Moby-Dick (1851).– Excerpted from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

John Elphinstone Erskine (1805 1887) was a naval officer who served as a naval commander during the Crimean War, as well as patrolling the West Indies and the Mediterranean. He also wrote several well-received accounts of voyages around the Pacific. As a Liberal MP later in life, he was an outspoken campaigner for the rights of Pacific islanders. This book is a genial narration of his visits to islands such as Fiji and Samoa. Written in a lyrical and affectionate style, the account covers the culture, religion and health of the native populations. Subjects discussed include local religion, cannibalism, gender relations and tribal wars. Rich with descriptive detail and paying special attention to the welfare of the local people and their varied encounters with white explorers, the text also includes the moving and detailed journal of an Englishman, John Jackson, who was stranded on Fiji for two years.

In the tradition of Wilbur Smith and Patrick O’Brian comes the next sensational South Seas adventure. The year is 1796, and three and a half years have passed since Captain Lightfoot and his crew helped restore justice and peace to Tonga. It is time for them to return to their colony in New Holland, and then on to Mother England. But fate plays strange tricks in this vast ocean, even on the true of heart, and Lightfoot and his Polynesian crew find themselves facing an old enemy. Meanwhile, far off in the Torres Strait, a Dutch East India merchant ship is wrecked on an uncharted reef. When the captain and officers are murdered by the mutinous crew, a fortune in gold and jewels locked away in the ship’s belly goes up for grabs. As fate brings these two crews together, Lightfoot, Sevesi, Hurley and Hiki will encounter the ruthless Company men, warring Aborigines, brutal Portuguese authorities and man-eating crocodiles. With the odds stacked against them, will the crew of the Royal make it out alive? ‘Islands of Gold’ is a mesmerising tale of greed, betrayal, gold and violence set in a world of savage beauty.

Arts of the Pacific Islands

Arts of the Pacific Islands

$23.99

In this comprehensive survey of the art of the Pacific Islands, including the Melanesian, Polynesian, Micronesian, and New Guinean traditions, author Anne D’Alleva explains the significance of these artworks by contextualizing them within each island’s unique culture and practices. In the process, D’Alleva examines the biases of both artists and Western viewers, telling an important history of both people and ideas through a detailed analysis of sculpture, paintings, textiles, dance, jewelry, and architecture. As these nations faced alternating periods of isolation, colonization, and contact with each other and the West, their forms of art were drastically altered to incorporate foreign influences and to develop autonomous identities and cultural independence. Therefore, their artistic practices explore the inherent tension between tradition and modernity within these communities. Ranging from the prehistoric period to the modern era, and accompanied by a timeline, bibliography, and glossary of terms, this book raises important questions for continued debate and study of the art of the Pacific Rim.

Adorning the World: Art of the Marquesas Islands

Adorning the World: Art of the Marquesas Islands

$23.94

Renowned as the final refuge of Paul Gauguin, the Marquesas Islands northeast of Tahiti are home to the Enata, a Polynesian people who developed one of the most extraordinary traditions of sculpture and decorative art in the Pacific. This book features works, including many previously unpublished, from the Metropolitan and other museums and private collections, and it explores the fascinating ways in which Marquesan art embodied and enhanced secular and religious life. Created to honor the archipelago’s diverse gods and ancestors, adorn the bodies of its people, and decorate everyday objects, art in the Marquesas encompassed virtually every aspect of sacred and secular life. Marquesan art is celebrated for its elegant stylization of the human image and intricately decorated surfaces, while also displaying an astonishing diversity of forms that range from robust figural sculpture in wood and stone to the most elaborate tattooing in the Pacific.

Pol’Noni Pure Polynesian Noni Juice (Morinda citrifolia; Noni; Hai Ba Ji) 16 fl oz: HH

$19.35

Used as a nutritional supplement or food additive. The tropical noni fruits (Morinda citrifolia) grow almost continuously on the trees, allowing for several harvests per year. The Marquesas Islands of French Polynesia are widely known for having perfect growing conditions for noni trees. The area is recognized as ideally suited for the trees and is a major source of supply of excellent quality noni juice extracted from the tree’s fruits and leaves. The fruit juice and leaves of the plant are known natural sources of vitamins and minerals. Noni juice has been used for centuries in Polynesia as a natural food and food suplement and as a tonic. Recent studies have identified noni fruit juice and leaves as excellent sources of significant concentrations of naturally occurring vitamin C, in the form of abscorbic acid. Pol’Noni juice and leaves also contain other vitamins in lesser amounts, as well as minerals, carbohydrates, enzymes, anti-oxidants, phytonutrients, bioflavonoids, proxeronine and scopoletin. These nutrients are considered to be beneficial to human health. Pol’Noni as a 100% noni juice extract that contains no additives, preservatives, sweeteners or adulterating elements of any kind. It is 100% pure, pasteurized Polynesian noni juice from French Polynesia. PNHP uses only fruits and leaves from wild-harvested noni trees. No pesticides or man-made fertilizers are used. In order to maintain Pol’Noni Juice in its most natural and concentrated state of purity, PNHP does not add additional fruit juices, sweeteners or other ingredients to the juice. All noni juice has a strong, bitter taste and its odor is penetrating. As Pol’Noni Juice contains 100% noni juice extract, some users may find these characteristics disagreeable. PNHP suggests that adults may take 1 tablespoonful of Pol’Noni Juice (one liquid ounce), 1/2 hour before breakfast, on an empty stomach, as a morning food or nutritional supplement. It can be swallowed straight or mixed with a small glass of another juice of your choice (some people like grape or cranberry juices as a ”mixer”). Some users like to place a tablespoonful under their tongues (no taste buds there), and leave it there for 30 seconds before swallowing it. If Pol’Noni Juice is taken one tablespoonful per day for six days on, with one day off per week, one 16 liquid ounce bottle of Pol’Noni Juice will generally last one person approximately one month or more. PNHP does not recommend Pol’Noni Juice for children under the age of 12. All food supplements should be kept in a safe place, out of the reach of children. How Pol’Noni Juice and Pol’Noni Capsules are Processed: Pol’Noni Juice originates in the beautiful and remote Marquesas Islands, part of French Polynesia. PNHP’s plant in Tahiti is maintained in a ”medical lab” state of cleanliness. Careful inspections of the processing and strict quality control procedures are employed at all times. The noni fruit is

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles The Nuclear MalayoPolynesian languages are a branch of the Austronesian family, proposed by Wouk Ross (2002), that are thought to have dispersed from a possible homeland in Sulawesi. They are called nuclear because they are the conceptual core of the MalayoPolynesian family, including both Malay and Polynesian. Nuclear MalayoPolynesian is found throughout Indonesia, apart from central Borneo, Sabah, and the north of Sulawesi, and into Melanesia and the Pacific. The Nuclear MalayoPolynesian languages are defined as those which have abandoned the Austronesian alignment inherited from the syntax of the protoMalayoPolynesian language. The Islands Time Forgot: Exploring the South Pacific Under Sail

The Islands Time Forgot: Exploring the South Pacific Under Sail

$18.71

Fifty-five islands, nineteen countries, seventeen thousand miles … and one amazing adventure. A fascinating story of four sailors who discovered the magic of the South Pacific … and the islands time forgotAfter recovery from a serious illness, Graham Morse vowed to achieve his dream of sailing across the South Pacific with his wife, Janet, and reliving the adventures of his boyhood heroes, Captain Cook, Thor Heyerdahl, and Christian Fletcher. They had expected to find some of the most beautiful islands in the world, and were not disappointed. But they were surprised to find a world where life has changed very little in two hundred years, and where the people have very different values than his own society, and however poor, take pleasure in giving. But sadly it is a world on the cusp of change.Travel with them as they discover the mysteries of ancient Polynesian culture, are welcomed into the homes of humble people, meet fascinating characters, are invited to village feasts, work with black pearl farmers, and swim with seals, sharks, and whales. The voyage –which took them across the world’s largest ocean –was not without its dangers, incident, and tragedy. The Islands Time Forgot is not just for sailors who yearn to make such a voyage, but for all armchair travelers who have dreamed about the South Pacific that only a sailing boat can reach.

Oxalis tuberosa is an annual plant that overwinters as underground stem tubers. These tubers are known as oca , oka, or New Zealand Yam. The plant was brought into cultivation in the central and southern Andes for its tubers, which are used as a root vegetable. The plant is not known in the wild, but populations of wild Oxalis species that bear smaller tubers are known from four areas of the central Andean region The stem tubers of oca form in the ground in the autumn. These are commonly boiled before eating although they can also be eaten raw. The leaves and young shoots can be eaten as a green vegetable. Introduced to Europe in 1830 as a competitor to the potato and to New Zealand as early as 1860, it has become popular in that country under the name New Zealand yam and is now a common table vegetable. It is also widely known in the Polynesian islands of the South Pacific under the name yam.

Excerpt: Acrocephalus warblers The Acrocephalus warblers are small, insectivorous passerine birds belonging to the genus Acrocephalus . Formerly in the paraphyletic Old World warbler assemblage, they are now separated as the namesake of the marsh- and tree-warbler family Acrocephalidae . They are sometimes called marsh-warblers or reed-warblers , but this invites confusion with Marsh Warbler and Reed Warbler proper, especially in North America where it is common to use lower case for bird species. These are rather drab brownish warblers usually associated with marshes or other wetlands. Some are streaked, others plain. Many species are migratory . Many species have a flat head profile, which gives rise to the group’s scientific name . Species breeding in temperate regions are strongly migratory . The most enigmatic species of the genus, the Large-billed Reed-warbler ( A. orinus ), was rediscovered in

Apologies to Thucydides: Understanding History as Culture and Vice Versa

Apologies to Thucydides: Understanding History as Culture and Vice Versa

$13.99

Thucydides’ classic work on the history of the Peloponnesian War is the root of Western conceptions of history—including the idea that Western history is the foundation of everyone else’s. Here, Marshall Sahlins takes on Thucydides and the conceptions of history he wrought with a groundbreaking new book that shows what a difference an anthropological concept of culture can make to the writing of history.Sahlins begins by confronting Thucydides’ account of the Peloponnesian War with an analogous “Polynesian War,” the fight for the domination of the Fiji Islands (1843-55) between a great sea power (like Athens) and a great land power (like Sparta). Sahlins draws parallels between the conflicts with an eye to their respective systems of power and sovereignty as well as to Thucydides’ alternation between individual (Pericles, Themistocles) and collective (the Athenians, the Spartans) actors in the making of history. Characteristic of most histories ever written, this alternation between the agency of “Great Men” and collective entities leads Sahlins to a series of incisive analyses ranging in subject matter from Bobby Thomson’s “shot heard round the world” for the 1951 Giants to the history-making of Napoleon and certain divine kings to the brouhaha over Elián Gonzalez. Finally, again departing from Thucydides, Sahlins considers the relationship between cultural order and historical contingency through the recounting of a certain royal assassination that changed the course of Fijian history, a story of fratricide and war worthy of Shakespeare. In this most convincing presentation yet of his influential theory of culture, Sahlins experiments with techniques for mixing rich narrative with cultural explication in the hope of doing justice at once to the actions of persons and the customs of people. And he demonstrates the necessity of taking culture into account in the creation of history—with apologies to Thucydides, who too often did no

Chapters: Archaeology in Samoa, Archaeology in Singapore, Archaeology in Lebanon, Archaeology in Ethiopia, Archaeology in Azerbaijan, Archaeology in Armenia, Archaeology in Afghanistan. Excerpt: Archaeology in Samoa began with the first systematic survery of achaeological remains on Savai’i island by Jack Golson in 1957. Since then, surveys and studies in the rest of Samoa have uncovered major findings of settlements, stone and earth mounds including star mounds, Lapita pottery remains and pre-historic artifacts. An important part of archaeology in Samoa and Oceania involves finding the answer to the origins of Polynesians, ongoing research which is being undertaken in conjunction with other fields including linguistics and genetics. The oldest date so far from pre-historic remains in Samoa has been calculated by New Zealand scientists to a likely true age of circa 3,000 BP (Before Present) from a Lapita site at Mulifanua during the 1970s. Jack Golson excavation site in Vailele with a visit from members of the I’iga Pisa family, 1957.Earlier accounts of ‘earthmounds’ and ‘monumental architecture’ were known but no scientific surveys were carried out until Golson’s indepth work in 1957. Golson also carried out field work on Upolu where he discovered the first pottery sherds in Samoa at Vailele village on the island’s north coast. At the 10th Pacific Science Congress in Honolulu in 1961, archaeologists decided to make a coordinated approach in investigating the region’s pre-history. During 1963-1964, this work was carried out by an international team led by Roger Curtis Green under the Polynesian Archaeology Programme of Auckland University. Building on Golson’s surveys, the team carried out field work on the islands of Savai’i, Upolu and Apolima. Anot… More:
