French Polynesian Islands

french polynesian islands
Which Polynesian islands are the most beautiful sights, fun culture, good food, etc?

I won’t travel to Polynesia until sometime next year, but I am really having trouble deciding on which one to choose: Hawaii, Samoa, Tonga, Fiji, Easter island, Tahiti and the French Polynesian islands, and the list goes on and on. Which islands would you recommend the most based on overall beauty(land and water), sights, culture and food?

I’ve only been to Hawai’i and Tonga.

If you go to Tonga, you should spend most of your time in Vava’u and surrounding islands. It’s an extra plane ride, but it’s worth it. The main island, Tongatapu, is kind of flat and boring. ‘Eua sounds like it might be nice too. The other thing about Tonga is it’s really laid back. If you’re the kind of person who likes to go on vacation and have everything just so, Tonga is not the right place for you. You won’t find four-star French restaurants and mints on your pillow.

Hawai’i is really great. What Hawai’i has that a lot of Polynesia doesn’t have is a lot more land. That comes with things that are found on land – mountains, waterfalls, rainforests. Of course they have water too – beaches, snorkeling, surfing. If you choose Hawai’i, then you still have to choose which island. Kaua’i is my favorite. It’s the most wild. O’ahu is the most civilized. Maui is a bit of both. I haven’t been to the Big Island.

I did have a long layover in Fiji in my way back from Tonga, and my impression was that the place to go is out to one of the islands in the Yasawas or Mamanucas. Or any of the surrounding islands, but those are some of the most popular.

If I were to go on another Polynesian trip, well I’d probably go back to Hawai’i. But if I were going to try something new, I’d look into the Marquesas (very undeveloped) or one of the Society Islands near Bora Bora, but maybe not Bora Bora. It’s too popular. Nearby are Ra’iatea and Huahine with some of the same appeal but less touristy.

The French Polynesian Dive Guide

The French Polynesian Dive Guide

$28.94

French Polynesia, a sweeping cluster of archipelagoes tossed into the Pacific Ocean like a handful of pearls, is the dream of millions of tourists and thousands of divers. The clearness of its waters, the richness of its sea-beds, and the diversity of its sea flora and fauna make it an underwater paradise. Coral or volcanic atolls, the 115 islands that make up French Polynesia, take up an area of 1,900 by 1,500 miles between the equator and the tropic of Capricorn, 2,500 miles to the east of Australia. With detailed, three-dimensional drawings and spectacular photographs, the volume describes the most fascinating dives in this archipelago at the world’s end. Divers will find information on the characteristics and topography of the region, on its flora and fauna, on the organization of the dives themselves, on safety precautions, as well as much other highly useful information. The book also contains a section dedicated to the protection of the underwater world. With intricate drawings and tables, the appendix explores the main species that live in the archipelago, making it easy to identify the inhabitants of the reefs.

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles The Polynesian Rat, or Pacific Rat (Rattus exulans), known to the Mori as kiore, is the third most widespread species of rat in the world behind the Brown Rat and Black Rat. The Polynesian Rat originates in Southeast Asia but, like its cousins, has become well travelled infiltrating Fiji and most Polynesian islands, including New Zealand, Easter Island and Hawaii. It shares the ability to easily adapt to many different types of environments, from grasslands to forests. Its habits are also similar, becoming closely associated with humans because of the easy access to food. As a result it has become a major pest in almost all areas within its distribution. The author combines this fresh archaeological data with comparative ethnographic and linguistic materials to present an innovative and perceptive account of the processes of culture change in the islands over three millennia. Pol’Noni Pure Polynesian Noni Juice (Morinda citrifolia; Noni; Hai Ba Ji) 16 fl oz: HH

$19.35

Used as a nutritional supplement or food additive. The tropical noni fruits (Morinda citrifolia) grow almost continuously on the trees, allowing for several harvests per year. The Marquesas Islands of French Polynesia are widely known for having perfect growing conditions for noni trees. The area is recognized as ideally suited for the trees and is a major source of supply of excellent quality noni juice extracted from the tree’s fruits and leaves. The fruit juice and leaves of the plant are known natural sources of vitamins and minerals. Noni juice has been used for centuries in Polynesia as a natural food and food suplement and as a tonic. Recent studies have identified noni fruit juice and leaves as excellent sources of significant concentrations of naturally occurring vitamin C, in the form of abscorbic acid. Pol’Noni juice and leaves also contain other vitamins in lesser amounts, as well as minerals, carbohydrates, enzymes, anti-oxidants, phytonutrients, bioflavonoids, proxeronine and scopoletin. These nutrients are considered to be beneficial to human health. Pol’Noni as a 100% noni juice extract that contains no additives, preservatives, sweeteners or adulterating elements of any kind. It is 100% pure, pasteurized Polynesian noni juice from French Polynesia. PNHP uses only fruits and leaves from wild-harvested noni trees. No pesticides or man-made fertilizers are used. In order to maintain Pol’Noni Juice in its most natural and concentrated state of purity, PNHP does not add additional fruit juices, sweeteners or other ingredients to the juice. All noni juice has a strong, bitter taste and its odor is penetrating. As Pol’Noni Juice contains 100% noni juice extract, some users may find these characteristics disagreeable. PNHP suggests that adults may take 1 tablespoonful of Pol’Noni Juice (one liquid ounce), 1/2 hour before breakfast, on an empty stomach, as a morning food or nutritional supplement. It can be swallowed straight or mixed with a small glass of another juice of your choice (some people like grape or cranberry juices as a ”mixer”). Some users like to place a tablespoonful under their tongues (no taste buds there), and leave it there for 30 seconds before swallowing it. If Pol’Noni Juice is taken one tablespoonful per day for six days on, with one day off per week, one 16 liquid ounce bottle of Pol’Noni Juice will generally last one person approximately one month or more. PNHP does not recommend Pol’Noni Juice for children under the age of 12. All food supplements should be kept in a safe place, out of the reach of children. How Pol’Noni Juice and Pol’Noni Capsules are Processed: Pol’Noni Juice originates in the beautiful and remote Marquesas Islands, part of French Polynesia. PNHP’s plant in Tahiti is maintained in a ”medical lab” state of cleanliness. Careful inspections of the processing and strict quality control procedures are employed at all times. The noni fruit is

Typee (1846; in full: Typee: A Peep at Polynesian Life) is American writer Herman Melville's first book, partly based on his actual experiences as a "beachcomber" on Nuku Hiva (which Melville spelled as Nukuheva) in the South Pacific Marquesas Islands and the title comes from a valley there called Tai Pi Vai. It was Melville's most popular work during his lifetime; for 19th century readers his career seemed to go downhill afterwards, but during the early 20th century it was seen as just the beginning of a career that peaked with Moby-Dick (1851).– Excerpted from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

Varua Tupu: New Writing from French Polynesia

$22.78

Varua Tupu strengthens the ancient ties between Hawai’i and the islands of French Polynesia by translating the voices of an emerging Ma’ohi (Polynesian) literary community into English and showcasing the cultural arts of the region in general. This volume features translations of a variety of locally celebrated genres, including poetry, memoir, and fiction. Though this work is focused on the current moment, it includes fresh translations of poet Henri Hiro, who served as a spark to the tinder of the Tahitian cultural renaissance in the 1960s and 1970s and who continues to inspire the currrent generation of literary activists. Since the eighteenth century, a mythic and misleading image of Tahiti has become familiar to the world at large. Varua Tupu represents the first opportunity for the international community to experience the many islands of Te Ao Ma’ohi through their own voices and visual arts.

John Elphinstone Erskine (1805 1887) was a naval officer who served as a naval commander during the Crimean War, as well as patrolling the West Indies and the Mediterranean. He also wrote several well-received accounts of voyages around the Pacific. As a Liberal MP later in life, he was an outspoken campaigner for the rights of Pacific islanders. This book is a genial narration of his visits to islands such as Fiji and Samoa. Written in a lyrical and affectionate style, the account covers the culture, religion and health of the native populations. Subjects discussed include local religion, cannibalism, gender relations and tribal wars. Rich with descriptive detail and paying special attention to the welfare of the local people and their varied encounters with white explorers, the text also includes the moving and detailed journal of an Englishman, John Jackson, who was stranded on Fiji for two years.

In the tradition of Wilbur Smith and Patrick O’Brian comes the next sensational South Seas adventure. The year is 1796, and three and a half years have passed since Captain Lightfoot and his crew helped restore justice and peace to Tonga. It is time for them to return to their colony in New Holland, and then on to Mother England. But fate plays strange tricks in this vast ocean, even on the true of heart, and Lightfoot and his Polynesian crew find themselves facing an old enemy. Meanwhile, far off in the Torres Strait, a Dutch East India merchant ship is wrecked on an uncharted reef. When the captain and officers are murdered by the mutinous crew, a fortune in gold and jewels locked away in the ship’s belly goes up for grabs. As fate brings these two crews together, Lightfoot, Sevesi, Hurley and Hiki will encounter the ruthless Company men, warring Aborigines, brutal Portuguese authorities and man-eating crocodiles. With the odds stacked against them, will the crew of the Royal make it out alive? ‘Islands of Gold’ is a mesmerising tale of greed, betrayal, gold and violence set in a world of savage beauty.

Captain Cook: A Legacy Under Fire

Captain Cook: A Legacy Under Fire

$24.95

In 1768 James Cook, on an epic sea journey that secured his place in history, discovered Australia. One hundred years later, countering cherished legends, George Collingridge dared to claim that the Portuguese had gotten to Australia first. Now Vanessa Collingridge, his distant cousin, unravels the strange tale of history’s most fascinating explorer and the man who sought to dethrone him. Collingridge charts Captain Cook’s celebrated voyages: He mapped the Pacific Islands, circumnavigated Antarctica, charted New Zealand, and discovered the New Hebrides and Australia, curing scurvy along the way. He was shipwrecked on the Great Barrier Reef, cruised with sails frozen amid two-hundred-foot-tall icebergs, struggled to keep his crew from losing battles with alcohol and Polynesian women, and somehow managed to stay one step ahead of competing French and Spanish explorers. Over his twenty-one years of adventure-until his murder on a beach in Kealakekua Bay in Hawaii in 1779-Cook changed the Western map of the world. Or so schoolchildren were taught. In 1883 British aristocrat George Collingridge sailed Down Under in search of adventure-and came across maps of Australia dated 1542 and 1546, drawn in northern France but based on Portuguese originals, suggesting that Cook was not the first to reach Australia. The proposal would prove Collingridge’s undoing-and yet it is a controversy that lives on.

The breakdown into administrative subdivisions was as a result of decree #72-408 of May 17, 1972, and the communes were thereafter established as a result of law #71-1028, dated December 24, 1971. The subdivisions administratives are: Below are several lists of the 48 communes, according to different sorting schemes. The Australian dollar is popular with currency traders due to comparatively high interest rates in Australia, the relative freedom of the foreign exchange market from government intervention, the general stability of Australia’s economy and political system, and the prevailing view that the Australian dollar offers diversification benefits in a portfolio containing the major world currencies, especially because of its greater exposure to Asian economies and the commodities cycle.History With pounds, shillings and pence to be replaced by decimal currency in the 1960s, many names for

Aus Wikipedia. Nicht dargestellt. Auszug: Kiribati (pronounced ( listen) ; Gilbertese: ), officially the Republic of Kiribati, is an island nation located in the central tropical Pacific Ocean. It is composed of 32 atolls and one raised coral island, dispersed over 3.5 million square kilometres, (1,351,000 square miles) straddling the equator, and bordering the International Date Line to the east. The name Kiribati is the local pronunciation of “Gilberts”, derived from the main island chain, the Gilbert Islands. Kiribati became independent from the United Kingdom in 1979. It is a member of the Commonwealth of Nations, the IMF and the World Bank, and became a full member of the United Nations in 1999. Kiribati was named Gilbert Islands after the British Captain Thomas Gilbert, who sighted the islands in 1788. The current name, Kiribati, is an adaptation of “Gilberts”, from the former European name the “Gilbert Islands”. Although the indigenous Gilbertese language name for the Gilbert Islands proper is Tungaru, the new state chose the name “Kiribati”, the Gilbertese rendition of “Gilberts”, as an equivalent of the former colony to acknowledge the inclusion of islands which were never considered part of the Gilberts chain. The area now called Kiribati has been inhabited by Micronesians speaking the same Oceanic language since sometime between 3000 BC and AD 1300. The area was not isolated; invaders from Tonga, Samoa, and Fiji later introduced Polynesian and Melanesian cultural aspects, respectively. Intermarriage tended to blur cultural differences and resulted in a significant degree of cultural homogenisation. The islands were first sighted by British and American ships in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The main island chain was named the Gilbert Islands in 1820 by a Russian admiral, Adam von Krusenstern, and French captain Louis Duperrey, after a British captain named Thomas Gilbert, who crossed the archipelago in

Aus Wikipedia. Nicht dargestellt. Auszug: Samoa (help·info), officially the Independent State of Samoa (formerly known as Western Samoa and German Samoa), is a country governing the western part of the Samoan Islands in the South Pacific Ocean. It became independent from New Zealand in 1962. The two main islands of Samoa are Upolu and one of the biggest islands in Polynesia Savai’i. The capital city Apia and Faleolo International Airport are situated on the island of Upolu. Samoa was admitted to the United Nations on 15 December 1976. The entire island group, inclusive of American Samoa, was called Navigators Islands by European explorers before the 20th century because of the Samoans’ seafaring skills. The Samoans originated from Austronesian predecessors during the terminal eastward Lapita expansion period from Southeast Asia and Melanesia approximately 1500 BCE. The Samoan origins are currently being reassessed due to new scientific evidence and carbon dating findings from 2003 and onwards. Intimate sociocultural and genetic ties were maintained between the eastern Lapita colonies and the archaeological record supports oral tradition and native genealogies that indicate inter-island voyaging and intermarriage between prehistoric Samoans, Fijians, and Tongans. Jacob Roggeveen (1659-1729), a Dutchman, was the first known European to sight the Samoan islands in 1722. This visit was followed by a French explorer by the name of Louis-Antoine de
