The French Polynesian Dive Guide

The French Polynesian Dive Guide

$28.94

French Polynesia, a sweeping cluster of archipelagoes tossed into the Pacific Ocean like a handful of pearls, is the dream of millions of tourists and thousands of divers. The clearness of its waters, the richness of its sea-beds, and the diversity of its sea flora and fauna make it an underwater paradise. Coral or volcanic atolls, the 115 islands that make up French Polynesia, take up an area of 1,900 by 1,500 miles between the equator and the tropic of Capricorn, 2,500 miles to the east of Australia. With detailed, three-dimensional drawings and spectacular photographs, the volume describes the most fascinating dives in this archipelago at the world’s end. Divers will find information on the characteristics and topography of the region, on its flora and fauna, on the organization of the dives themselves, on safety precautions, as well as much other highly useful information. The book also contains a section dedicated to the protection of the underwater world. With intricate drawings and tables, the appendix explores the main species that live in the archipelago, making it easy to identify the inhabitants of the reefs.

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles The Polynesian Rat, or Pacific Rat (Rattus exulans), known to the Mori as kiore, is the third most widespread species of rat in the world behind the Brown Rat and Black Rat. The Polynesian Rat originates in Southeast Asia but, like its cousins, has become well travelled infiltrating Fiji and most Polynesian islands, including New Zealand, Easter Island and Hawaii. It shares the ability to easily adapt to many different types of environments, from grasslands to forests. Its habits are also similar, becoming closely associated with humans because of the easy access to food. As a result it has become a major pest in almost all areas within its distribution. Pol’Noni Pure Polynesian Noni Juice (Morinda citrifolia; Noni; Hai Ba Ji) 16 fl oz: HH

$19.35

Used as a nutritional supplement or food additive. The tropical noni fruits (Morinda citrifolia) grow almost continuously on the trees, allowing for several harvests per year. The Marquesas Islands of French Polynesia are widely known for having perfect growing conditions for noni trees. The area is recognized as ideally suited for the trees and is a major source of supply of excellent quality noni juice extracted from the tree’s fruits and leaves. The fruit juice and leaves of the plant are known natural sources of vitamins and minerals. Noni juice has been used for centuries in Polynesia as a natural food and food suplement and as a tonic. Recent studies have identified noni fruit juice and leaves as excellent sources of significant concentrations of naturally occurring vitamin C, in the form of abscorbic acid. Pol’Noni juice and leaves also contain other vitamins in lesser amounts, as well as minerals, carbohydrates, enzymes, anti-oxidants, phytonutrients, bioflavonoids, proxeronine and scopoletin. These nutrients are considered to be beneficial to human health. Pol’Noni as a 100% noni juice extract that contains no additives, preservatives, sweeteners or adulterating elements of any kind. It is 100% pure, pasteurized Polynesian noni juice from French Polynesia. PNHP uses only fruits and leaves from wild-harvested noni trees. No pesticides or man-made fertilizers are used. In order to maintain Pol’Noni Juice in its most natural and concentrated state of purity, PNHP does not add additional fruit juices, sweeteners or other ingredients to the juice. All noni juice has a strong, bitter taste and its odor is penetrating. As Pol’Noni Juice contains 100% noni juice extract, some users may find these characteristics disagreeable. PNHP suggests that adults may take 1 tablespoonful of Pol’Noni Juice (one liquid ounce), 1/2 hour before breakfast, on an empty stomach, as a morning food or nutritional supplement. It can be swallowed straight or mixed with a small glass of another juice of your choice (some people like grape or cranberry juices as a ”mixer”). Some users like to place a tablespoonful under their tongues (no taste buds there), and leave it there for 30 seconds before swallowing it. If Pol’Noni Juice is taken one tablespoonful per day for six days on, with one day off per week, one 16 liquid ounce bottle of Pol’Noni Juice will generally last one person approximately one month or more. PNHP does not recommend Pol’Noni Juice for children under the age of 12. All food supplements should be kept in a safe place, out of the reach of children. How Pol’Noni Juice and Pol’Noni Capsules are Processed: Pol’Noni Juice originates in the beautiful and remote Marquesas Islands, part of French Polynesia. PNHP’s plant in Tahiti is maintained in a ”medical lab” state of cleanliness. Careful inspections of the processing and strict quality control procedures are employed at all times. The noni fruit is

This is an archaeological perspective on the elaborate system of chiefdoms found in the islands of Polynesia. While the growth and development of complex social and political systems in this region have long interested anthropologists and ethnographers, the islands rich sources of archaeological data have since been exploited. The author combines this fresh archaeological data with comparative ethnographic and linguistic materials to present an innovative and perceptive account of the processes of culture change in the islands over three millennia. Using comparative ethnography, lexical reconstruction and direct archaeological evidence, the author reconstructs the broad outlines of Ancestral Polynesian Society, from which the diverse societies of the Polynesian region descended. Major processes of cultural change are analysed in detail, including colonization, adaptation to changing environments, development of intensive production and social conflict and competition. High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles The Nuclear MalayoPolynesian languages are a branch of the Austronesian family, proposed by Wouk Ross (2002), that are thought to have dispersed from a possible homeland in Sulawesi. They are called nuclear because they are the conceptual core of the MalayoPolynesian family, including both Malay and Polynesian. Nuclear MalayoPolynesian is found throughout Indonesia, apart from central Borneo, Sabah, and the north of Sulawesi, and into Melanesia and the Pacific. The Nuclear MalayoPolynesian languages are defined as those which have abandoned the Austronesian alignment inherited from the syntax of the protoMalayoPolynesian language. Tupaia: Captain Cook's Polynesian Navigator

Tupaia: Captain Cook’s Polynesian Navigator

$50.93

Tupaia was the brilliant Polynesian navigator and translator who sailed with Captain James Cook from Tahiti, piloted the "Endeavour" across the South Pacific, and interceded on behalf of the European voyagers with the warrior Maori of New Zealand. As a man of high social ranking, Tupaia was also invaluable as an intermediary, interpreting local rituals and ceremonies. Joseph Banks, the botanist with Cook’s expedition, is famous for describing the manners and customs of the Polynesian people in detail. Much of the credit for this information rightfully belongs to Tupaia-indeed, he could aptly be called the Pacific’s first anthropologist. Despite all this, Tupaia’s colorful tale has never been part of the popular Captain Cook legend. This unique book tells the first-contact story with Europeans as seen through the eyes of the Polynesians, and documents how Tupaia’s contributions changed the history of the Pacific.

Captain Cook: A Legacy Under Fire

Captain Cook: A Legacy Under Fire

$24.95

In 1768 James Cook, on an epic sea journey that secured his place in history, discovered Australia. One hundred years later, countering cherished legends, George Collingridge dared to claim that the Portuguese had gotten to Australia first. Now Vanessa Collingridge, his distant cousin, unravels the strange tale of history’s most fascinating explorer and the man who sought to dethrone him. Collingridge charts Captain Cook’s celebrated voyages: He mapped the Pacific Islands, circumnavigated Antarctica, charted New Zealand, and discovered the New Hebrides and Australia, curing scurvy along the way. He was shipwrecked on the Great Barrier Reef, cruised with sails frozen amid two-hundred-foot-tall icebergs, struggled to keep his crew from losing battles with alcohol and Polynesian women, and somehow managed to stay one step ahead of competing French and Spanish explorers. Over his twenty-one years of adventure-until his murder on a beach in Kealakekua Bay in Hawaii in 1779-Cook changed the Western map of the world. Or so schoolchildren were taught. In 1883 British aristocrat George Collingridge sailed Down Under in search of adventure-and came across maps of Australia dated 1542 and 1546, drawn in northern France but based on Portuguese originals, suggesting that Cook was not the first to reach Australia. The proposal would prove Collingridge’s undoing-and yet it is a controversy that lives on.

Excerpt: The Australian dollar (sign : $ ; code : AUD ) is the currency of the Commonwealth of Australia , including Christmas Island , Cocos (Keeling) Islands , and Norfolk Island , as well as the independent Pacific Island states of Kiribati , Nauru and Tuvalu . Within Australia it is almost always abbreviated with the dollar sign ( $ ), with A $ or AU $ sometimes used informally to distinguish it from other dollar -denominated currencies. It is subdivided into 100 cents .The Australian dollar is currently the sixth-most-traded currency in the world foreign exchange markets behind the US dollar , the euro , the yen , the pound sterling , and the Swiss franc , accounting in 2007 for approx. 3.3 % of worldwide daily foreign-exchange turnover. The Australian dollar is popular with currency traders due to comparatively high interest rates in Australia, the relative freedom of the foreign exchange market from government intervention, the general stability of Australia’s economy and political system, and the prevailing view that the Australian dollar offers diversification benefits in a portfolio containing the major world currencies, especially because of its greater exposure to Asian economies and the commodities cycle.History With pounds, shillings and pence to be replaced by decimal currency in the 1960s, many names for

Auszug: The apostrophe ( ‘ , often rendered as ‘ ) is a punctuation mark, and sometimes a diacritic mark, in languages that use the Latin alphabet or certain other alphabets. In English, it serves two main purposes-the omission of one or more letters (as in doesn’t for does not) and the marking of possessives (as in the cat’s whiskers), though usage in forming certain plurals is sometimes accepted. According to the Oxford English Dictionary (OED), the word comes ultimately from Greek (, ” ‘turning away’, or elision”), through Latin and French. The apostrophe is different from the closing single quotation mark (usually rendered identically but serving a different purpose), and from the similar-looking prime ( ′ ), which is used to indicate measurement in feet or arcminutes, as well as for various mathematical purposes) and ?okina ( ) (which represents a glottal stop in Polynesian languages). An apostrophe is used in English to indicate possession. The practice ultimately derives from the Old English genitive case: the “of” case, itself used as a possessive in many languages. The genitive form of many nouns ended with the inflection -es, which evolved into a simple -s for the possessive ending. An apostrophe was later added to mark the omitted e. Joint and separate possessionA distinction is made between joint possession (Jason and Sue’s emails: the emails of both Jason and Sue), and separate possession (Jason’s and Sue’s emails: the emails of Jason, and the emails of Sue). Chapters: Juan García Esquivel, Arthur Lyman, Yma Sumac, Martin Denny, Exotica, Les Baxter, Combustible Edison, Eden Ahbez, Korla Pandit, Choucoune, Caravan, Sandy Warner, Exotica, Quiet Village, Gene Rains, Exotica Volume Ii. Excerpt: Arthur Lyman (February 2, 1932 February 24, 2002) was an American jazz vibraphone and marimba player. His group popularized a style of faux-Polynesian music during the 1950s and 1960s which later became known as exotica . His albums became favorite stereo-effect demonstration discs during the early days of the stereophonic LP album for their elaborate and colorful percussion, deep bass and 3-dimensional recording soundstage. Lyman was known as “the King of Lounge music .” Biography Arthur Lyman was born on the island of Oahu in the U.S. territory of Hawaii, the youngest of eight children of a Hawaiian mother and a father of Hawaiian, French, Belgian and Chinese extraction. When Arthur’s father, a land surveyor, lost his eyesight in an accident on Kauai, the family moved to the island of Oahu and settled in Makiki , a section of Honolulu . Arthur’s father was very strict with him, each day after school locking him in a room with orders to play along to a stack of Benny Goodman records “to learn what good music is.” “I had a little toy marimba,” Lyman later recalled, “a sort of bass xylophone , and from those old 78 rpm disks I learned every note Lionel Hampton recorded with the Goodman group.” He became adept at the 4-mallet style of playing which produces a fuller sound. He became good enough to turn professional at age 14 when he joined a group called the Gadabouts, playing vibes in the cool-jazz style then in vogue. “I was working at Leroy’s, a little nightclub down by Kakaako . I was making about $60 a week, working Monday to Saturday, from
