Polynesia Culture Center

Culture of Polynesia?
Polynesia is generally characterized by large mineral-rich islands, small communities headed by big men, and a social structure centered in villages and kin groups. Is this true?
No, it is partially true. but the vast majority of Polynesian islands are Coral in composition and have very few minerals. Lots of the island communities are centered around small towns and villages and family values have more importance than many places in the world.
Your question is quite broad. Try Wikki for some good info. and work from there.

Yarmukian Culture $79.66 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles The Yarmukian Culture is a Neolithic culture of the ancient Levant. It was the first culture in Prehistoric Israel and one of the oldest in the Levant to make use of pottery. The Yarmukian derives its name from the Yarmouk River which flows near its type site at Shaar HaGolan, a kibbutz at the foot of the Golan Heights. The first Yarmukian settlement was unearthed at Megiddo during the 1930s, but it was not identified as a distinct Neolithic culture at the time. At Shaar HaGolan, in 1949, Prof. Moshe Stekelis first identified the Yarmukian Culture, a Pottery Neolithic culture that inhabited parts of Israel and Jordan. The site, dated to ca. 64006000 BC (calibrated), is located in the central Jordan Valley, on the northern bank of the Yarmouk River. Its size is circa 20 hectares, making it one of the largest settlements in the world at that time. Although other Yarmukian sites have been identified since, Shaar HaGolan is the largest, probably indicating its role as the Yarmukian center. Food for the Flames: Idols and Missionaries in Central Polynesia $62.45 Twenty-five years after Captain Cook, the London Missionary Society sent its first representatives to the South Seas. Their goal was to eradicate heathenism and idolatry, but unwittingly, they became agents for the preservation of Polynesian culture through their diligent recording of language and religious practices. They even preserved a number of religious artifacts, which they sent back to England for exhibition in the Mission Museum in London. "Food for the Flames" focuses on these artifacts, the idols that avoided the flames. With the scientist’s belief in letting the evidence speak for itself, the author, a biochemist, has mined a wide range of primary sources to bring together a wealth of new information on a generally unpopular subject, the missionary endeavour. Missionary subjects, Polynesian ‘temples’, and numerous idols are illustrated in color. The majority of this material is published here for the first time. |

Third Culture $26.32 Thirty-five years ago, C. P. Snow, in a now famous essay, wrote about the polarization of the "two cultures" — literary intellectuals on the one hand, and scientists on the other. Although he hoped for the emergence of a "third culture" that would bridge the gap, it is only recently that science has changed the intellectual landscape. Brockman’s thesis that science is emerging as the intellectual center of our society is brought to life vividly in "The Third Culture, " which weaves together the voices of some of today’s most influential scientific figures, including: Stephen Jay Gould and Richard Dawkins on the implications of evolution Steven Pinker, Marvin Minsky, Daniel C. Dennett, and Roger Penrose on how the mind works Murray Gell-Mann and Stuart Kauffman on the new sciences of complexity "The Third Culture" is an honest picture of science in action. It is at once stimulating, challenging, and riveting. |

Wari Culture $68.51 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles The Wari were a Middle Horizon civilization that flourished in the Andes in the southcentral coastal area of modernday Peru, from about A.D. 500 to 900. This city was the center of a civilization that covered much of the highlands and coast of modern Peru. Later it expanded to include much of the territory of the earlier Moche and later Chimu cultures. The bestpreserved remnants of the Huari Culture exist near the town of Quinua at the Wari Ruins, and at the recently discovered Northern Wari ruins near the city of Chiclayo. Food Culture in the Pacific Islands $56.09 The food culture of the Pacific Islands has been determined by isolation from the rest of the world. Original immigrants from Asia brought their foods, animals, and culinary skills with them, then for several thousand years, they were largely uninfluenced by outsiders. The tropical climate of much of the region, unique island geology and environmental factors also played a role in the evolution of islander cuisine, which is based on unique ingredients. The staples of breadfruit, yams, taro, coconut, sweet potato, and cassava are incorporated into a cuisine that uses cooking and preservation techniques unique to Polynesia, Micronesia, and Melanesia. Today, food culture in the Pacific is largely one of extremes. Although traditional foods and cookery survive and are highly valued, Westernization has meant that the overall diet of islanders has been negatively transformed and that islands are net importers of unhealthful foods. Ironically, the tourism industry has re-engaged islander people in food production and boosted their sense of identity. Students, food mavens, and travellers will find this to be a stellar introduction to the current culture of the Pacific Islands, with discussion of Hawaii, Australia, and New Zealand included. Chapter 1, Historical Overview, offers a fascinating chronicle of the evolution of a food culture of extremes, of isolation, climate, environment, and Western influences. Chapter 2, Major Foods and Ingredients, introduces a host of traditional tropical manna as well as imported products. The Cooking chapter discusses the truly unique cooking styles of the islands, such as steam-baking in the ground in an umu (oven). Chapter 4, Typical Meals, largely explores the emphasis on the ubiquitous processed foods. A Regional Specialties chapter reveals both pan-regional dishes and the noted local dishes. Chapter 6′s Eating Out discussion shows the new acceptance of the individualist, recreational ritual of eating away from the community. The typical life-cycle food rituals are covered in the Special Occasions chapter. A final chapter on Diet and Health highlights the increase in Western diseases arising from diet and lifestyle changes and discusses timely food security issues as well. Recipes are interspersed throughout, and a timeline, glossary, selected bibliography, and photos round out the coverage. |

Off Center: Power and Culture Relations Between Japan and the United States $37.03 What is the connection between the United States’ imbalance of trade with Japan and the imbalance of translation in the other direction? Between Western literary critics’ estimates of Japanese fiction and Japanese politicians’ "America-bashing"? Between the portrayal of East-West relations in the film "Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence" and the terms of the GATT trade agreements? In this provocative study, Masao Miyoshi deliberately adopts an off-center perspective–one that restores the historical asymmetry of encounters between Japan and the United States, from Commodore Perry to Douglas MacArthur–to investigate the blindness that has characterized relations between the two cultures. Both nations are blinkered by complementary forms of ethnocentricity. The United States–or, more broadly, the Eurocentric West–believes its culture to be universal, while Japan believes its culture to be essentially unique. Thus American critics read and judge Japanese literature by the standards of the Western novel; Japanese politicians pay lip service to "free trade" while supporting protectionist policies at home and abroad. Miyoshi takes off from literature to range across culture, politics, and economics in his analysis of the Japanese and their reflections in the West; the fiction of Tanizaki, Mishima, Oe; trade negotiations; Japan bashing and America bashing; Emperor worship; Japanese feminist writing; the domination of transcribed conversation as a literary form in contemporary Japan. In his confrontation with cultural critics, Miyoshi does not spare "centrists" of either persuasion, nor those who refuse to recognize that "the literary and the economical, the cultural and the industrial, are inseparable." Yet contentious as this book can be, it ultimately holds out, by its example, hope for a criticism that can see beyond the boundaries of national cultures–without substituting a historically false "universal" culture–and that examines cultural convergences from a viewpoint that remains provocatively and fruitfully off center. |

Paideia: The Ideals of Greek Culture Volume II: In Search of the Divine Center $46.99 Werner Jaeger’s classic three-volume work, originally published in 1939, is now available in paperback. Paideia, the shaping of Greek character through a union of civilization, tradition, literature, and philosophy is the basis for Jaeger’s evaluation of Hellenic culture. Volume I describes the foundation, growth, and crisis of Greek culture during the archaic and classical epochs, ending with the collapse of the Athenian empire. The second and third volumes of the work deal with the intellectual history of ancient Greece in the Age of Plato, the 4th century B.C.–the age in which Greece lost everything that is valued in this world–state, power, liberty–but still clung to the concept of paideia. As its last great poet, Menander summarized the primary role of this ideal in Greek culture when he said: "The possession which no one can take away from man is paideia." |

Communicating Health: A Culture-Centered Approach $26.56 "Communicating Health: A Culture-Centered Approach" provides an overview of the role of culture in the study of health communication. The book introduces readers to the concept of culture and addresses the ways in which culture shapes, constructs, transforms and interacts with communication processes related to a variety of health experiences, interactions, and outcomes. The culture-centered approach offered in this book argues that communication theorizing ought to locate culture at the center of the communication process such that the theories are contextually embedded and co-constructed through dialogue with the cultural participants. The locally situated meanings of health are simultaneously connected with structural processes within which the local culture is embedded. The discussions in the book situate health communication within local contexts by looking at identities, meanings and experiences of health among community members, and locating them in the realm of the structures that constitute health. The culture-centered approach foregrounds the voices of cultural members in the co-constructions of health risks and in the articulation of health problems facing communities. The theoretical discussion of the culture-centered approach offers the foundation for interrogating the practice of health communication in intrapersonal, interpersonal, mass mediated, organizational, societal and policy contexts. Each chapter ties in the discussion of culture to questions of marginalization and access to healthcare. Ultimately, the book provides theoretical and practical suggestions for developing a culture-centered understanding of health communication processes. |

Caring for Words in a Culture of Lies $18 “Like any other life-sustaining resource, says Marilyn Chandler McEntyre, language can be depleted, polluted, contaminated, eroded, and filled with artificial stimulants. Today more than ever, language needs to be rescued and restored. Drawing on a wide range of sources, both critical and literary, Caring for Words in a Culture of Lies is an engaging address to everyone concerned with preserving the vitality and precision of the spoken and written word. / If every literate person in the United States read this book, the result could dramatically transform our society. . . . Written with modesty, keen insight, and grace, Marilyn Chandler McEntyres Caring for Words in a Culture of Lies proposes a revolution of human expression that would bring precision, honesty, and felicity to the spoken and written discourse of contemporary culture. This is a book to read and pass on with the fervent hope that its truth may spread and endure. Emory Elliott / Director of the Center for Ideas and Society / University of California, Riverside / McEntyres prose is lyrical, at times luminous. . . . Her thoughtful analyses of the written word invite all of us to read more deeply, and her discussion of how readers enter a text leads us to examine the architectural structure of our own work. Budgeting and Organizational Culture $116.3 Recently, public higher education institutions have increasingly turned their attention to incentive based budgeting models as internal resource allocation models. However, these models have been criticized for bringing market forces, competitiveness, and businesslike perceptions into the higher education environment. In recent years, the literature on incentive budgeting systems has grown; mostly, through institutional case studies. However, most of these studies focused on the formal structures and on the financial outcomes. The literature lacks any exploration of the effects that such changes have on an organizations culture. However, incentive based budgeting systems involve more than simply formulas. They also bring a new frame of mind into higher education organizations. Decentralization of the decisionmaking process is one such change that is attached to incentive based budgeting systems. Thus, incentive based budgeting models affect the whole institution, its formal and informal structures as well as its culture. This study focuses on responsibility center management (RCM) and its perceived effects on the culture of decisionmaking at a higher education institution. Divine Transcendence and the Culture of Change $30.05 In this book David H. Hopper explores why the doctrine of transcendence of God has been lost to contemporary theology, in conversation with H. Richard Niebuhr, Martin Luther, Martin Bucer, John Calvin, and Francis Bacon. Hopper argues that the problem is, in a word, tolerance. He acknowledges the pragmatic worth of tolerance for getting on with necessary tasks, but expresses reservations about the sufficient, sustaining nature of tolerance for the faith community in an altered, global world. Divine Transcendence and the Culture of Change seeks to reclaim necessary dimensions of faith that have collapsed into the cultural vacuum created by thoughtless tolerance, and to restore Gods transcendence to the center of all biblical religion. |

The book has three primary goals: To provide a theoretically sound framework of five basic cultural dimensions, based on clear, academically accurate definitions, which are relevant to military missions; To apply these basic cultural principles to actual environments to which the military are deployed, or may deploy in the future, showing how the principles of Operational Culture can be applied across the geographic and kinetic spectrum of operations; To develop a capacity among the military at all levels to think systemically about culture, and to apply that thinking to learning about culture in both professional military education and pre-deployment training. |

The Culture of the Book in Tibet $41.73 The history of the book in Tibet involves more than literary trends and trade routes. Functioning as material, intellectual, and symbolic object, the book has been an instrumental tool in the construction of Tibetan power and authority, and its history opens a crucial window onto the cultural, intellectual, and economic life of an immensely influential Buddhist society. Spanning the fourteenth to the eighteenth centuries, Kurtis R. Schaeffer envisions the scholars and hermits, madmen and ministers, kings and queens who produced Tibet’s massive canons. He describes how Tibetan scholars edited and printed works of religion, literature, art, and science and what this indicates about the interrelation of material and cultural practices. The Tibetan book is at once the embodiment of the Buddha’s voice, a principal means of education, a source of tradition and authority, an economic product, a finely crafted aesthetic object, a medium of Buddhist written culture, and a symbol of the religion itself. Books stood at the center of debates on the role of libraries in religious institutions, the relative merits of oral and written teachings, and the economy of religion in Tibet. A meticulous study that draws on more than 150 understudied Tibetan sources, "The Culture of the Book in Tibet" is the first volume to trace this singular history. Through a single object, Schaeffer accesses a greater understanding of the cultural and social history of the Tibetan plateau. |

Food Culture in Spain $61.64 Spanish food culture has evolved around strong regional cuisines and representative elements. This volume offers an overview of Spanish food and eating habits, taking into account a long and complex history, plus distinctive social, cultural, linguistic, geographic, political, and economic characteristics. Spain’s location at the crossroads of Europe and North Africa has made it a gastronomic melting pot, with Arab influences and New World ingredients particularly noted. Readers will learn about the unique food culture in each region and how food practices and dishes in the Iberian Peninsula have developed over the centuries. Typical dishes and drinks, especially the Spanish wines, are described in context, with many accompanying recipes. Gastronomy in Spain has always been of utmost importance. Recently, the new Spanish gastronomy has taken center stage with internationally recognized chefs. Spaniards are shown to be extremely social eaters and drinkers who like to eat out. The everyday routine of eating out, such as at work and school, is clarified as well. Home cooking and the Spanish kitchen get special attention. Finally, although Spanish food has always been associated with the highly touted Mediterranean diet, health concerns about current eating trends are discussed. A timeline, a chronology, and illustrations round out the coverage. |

Visual Culture in Shanghai, 1850s-1930s $41.48 Visual Culture in Shanghai, 1850s-1930s is a study of formal and informal meanings of Haipai ("Shanghai School" or "Shanghai Style"), as seen through the paintings of the Shanghai school as well as other media of visual representation. The book provides us a point of entry into the nexus of relationships that structured the encounter between China and the West as experienced by the treaty-port Chinese in their everyday life. Exploring such relationships gives us a better sense of the ultimate significance of Shanghai’s rise as China’s dominant metropolitan center. This book will appeal not only to art historians, but also to students of history, gender studies, women’s studies, and culture studies who are interested in modern China as well as questions of art patronage, nationalism, colonialism, visual culture, and representation of women. "This book constitutes a significant contribution to the literature about a period and a city that were pivotal to the emergence of modern China." -Richard K. Kent, Franklin & Marshall College. "This book navigates the complexity of Chinese modernity.. It bridges, conceptually and visually, the China of the past to present-day Shanghai, the symbol of the urban economy of 21st-century China." -Chao-Hui Jenny Liu, New York University. "Shanghai was the rising and dynamic metropolis, where many aspects of modernity were embraced with enthusiasm. Pictorial art was no longer the domain of the elite, but professionalization, commercialization, popularization, and Westernization contributed to the dissemination of images to a larger and diverse audience." -Minna Trm, University of Helsinki. |

Culture and Customs of the Palestinians $3.94 The Palestinians have been at the center of Middle Eastern and world history for nearly a century. The core issues of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict are still the ones that emerged in 1948, after what Palestinians term "al-Nakba," the destruction of historical Palestine and the dispossession and expulsion of its people. At the center of this vortex of politics, diplomacy, oppression, resistance, and struggle are the Palestinians. The Palestinians are an ancient Arab people, with both Islamic and Christian adherents, and their traditional culture and present way of life under difficult conditions are greatly illuminated for students and general readers. A clear historical overview of Palestine, the diaspora, and the conflict is provided, and the history colors the rest of the narrative, addressing crucial aspects of Palestinian society. Palestinians struggle to retain their traditions. Their modern social structure, values, social customs, and life, including education, in villages, refugee camps, and cities are covered. The importance of extended family and women’s roles in a continuing patriarchy are also addressed. The famed Palestinian embroidery and typical food dishes are celebrated. Chapters on modern literature and the arts and cinema stress the artistic focus on the conflict with Israel. A helpful timeline, copious bibliography, and glossary round out the coverage. |

Culture of Complaint: The Fraying of America $3.95 The best-selling author of The Shock of the New, The Fatal Shore, and Barcelona here delivers a withering polemic aimed at the heart of recent American politics and culture. Culture of Complaint is a call for the re-knitting of a fragmented and over-tribalized America–a deeply passionate book, filled with barbed wit and devastating takes on public life, both left and right of center. To the right, Hughes fires broadsides at the populist demagogy of Pat Buchanan, Pat Robertson, Jesse Helms and especially Ronald Reagan ("with somnambulistic efficiency, Reagan educated America down to his level. He left his country a little stupider in 1988 than it had been in 1980, and a lot more tolerant of lies"). To the left, he skewers political correctness ("political etiquette, not politics itself"), Afrocentrism, and academic obsessions with theory ("The world changes more deeply, widely, thrillingly than at any moment since 1917, perhaps since 1848, and the American academic left keeps fretting about how phallocentricity is inscribed in Dickens’ portrayal of Little Nell"). PC censoriousness and "family-values" rhetoric, he argues, are only two sides of the same character, extrusions of America’s puritan heritage into the present–and, at root, signs of America’s difficulty in seeing past the end of the Us-versus-Them mentality implanted by four decades of the Cold War. In the long retreat from public responsibility beaten by America in the 80s, Hughes sees "a hollowness at the cultural core"–a nation "obsessed with therapies and filled with distrust of formal politics; skeptical of authority and prey to superstition; its language corroded by fake pity and euphemism." It resembles "late Rome…in the corruption and verbosity of its senators, in its reliance on sacred geese (those feathered ancestors of our own pollsters and spin-doctors) and in its submission to senile, deified emperors controlled by astrologers and extravagant wives." Culture of Complaint is fired by a deep concern for the way Hughes sees his adopted country heading. But it is not a relentless diatribe. If Hughes lambastes some aspects of American politics, he applauds Vaclav Havel’s vision of politics "not as the art of the useful, but politics as practical morality, as service to the truth." And if he denounces PC, he offers a brilliant and heartfelt defence of non-ideological multiculturalism as an antidote to Americans’ difficulty in imagining the rest of the world–and other Americans. Here, then, is an extraordinary cri de coeur, an outspoken call for the reconstruction of America’s ideas about its recent self. It is a book that everyone interested in American culture will want to read. |

Major Problems in American Popular Culture, 1st Edition $55.49 Each chapter in MAJOR PROBLEMS IN AMERICAN POPULAR CULTURE comprises essays and documents that focus on a particular aspect of American popular culture. These essays and documents will encourage you to think about the centrality of popular culture in American life and its powerful role in forging identity, historical memory, and relationships among consumers, producers, citizens, and the state. They reinforce the idea that popular culture is the ground on which cultural and social transformations are worked. Race and class are at the center of the analysis, and these categories, along with gender and nationalism, thread through the chapters. They all argue for seeing popular audiences as active creators rather than passive receivers of popular culture. |

The Culture of Power and the Power of Culture: Old Regime Europe 1660-1789 $56.72 In this fascinating new account of Old Regime Europe, T.C.W. Blanning explores the cultural revolution which transformed eighteenth-century Europe. During this period the court culture exemplified by Louis XIV’s Versailles was pushed from the center to the margins by the emergence of a new kind of space – the public sphere. The author shows how many of the world’s most important cultural institutions developed in this space: the periodical, the newspaper, the novel, the lending library, the coffee house, the voluntary association, the journalist, and the critic. |

Pornography: Film and Culture $28.94 Porn is big business. By some estimates, it grosses more revenue per year than the entire "legitimate" film and entertainment industry. Most large hotel chains offer pay-for-view adult movies, many video stores have adult movie rental sections, and Internet porn sites have proliferated by the thousands. With porn so ubiquitous in mainstream American culture, why is it that when "respectable" people talk about this phenomenon, they act puzzled, as if they cannot imagine who would watch such worthless and meaningless smut?In this collection of path-breaking essays, thirteen respected scholars bring critical insights to the reality of porn and what it can tell us about ourselves sexually, culturally, and economically. Moving beyond simplistic feminist and religious positions that cast these films as categorical evils-a collective preserve of sexual perversion, misogyny, pedophilia, and racism-the contributors to this volume raise the bar of the debate and push porn studies into intriguing new territory. The essays are divided into two sections. The first of these reprints important debates on the topic and traces the evolution of pornographic film, including comparing its development to that of Hollywood cinema. The second part presents new essays that consider current trends in the field, including pornography’s expansion into new technologies. This book separates this compelling genre from the sensation and shame that have long surrounded and obscured it. It will be of interest to general readers and film scholars alike.Peter Lehman is the director of the Film and Media Studies Program and the Center for Film and Media Research at Arizona State University, Tempe. He is the author, coauthor, and editor of twelve books including, Roy Orbison: The Invention of an Alternative Rock Masculinity.A volume in the Depth of Field Series, edited by Charles Affron, Mirella Jona Affron, and Robert Lyons |

9/11: The Culture of Commemoration $19.13 After the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, a general sense that the world was different–that nothing would ever be the same–settled upon a grieving nation; the events of that day were received as cataclysmic disruptions of an ordered world. Refuting this claim, David Simpson examines the complex and paradoxical character of American public discourse since that September morning, considering the ways the event has been aestheticized, exploited, and appropriated, while "Ground Zero" remains the contested site of an effort at adequate commemoration. In "9/11, "Simpson argues that elements of the conventional culture of mourning and remembrance–grieving the dead, summarizing their lives in obituaries, and erecting monuments in their memory–have been co-opted for political advantage. He also confronts those who labeled the event an "apocalypse," condemning their exploitation of 9/11 for the defense of torture and war. In four elegant chapters–two of which expand on essays originally published in the "London Review of Books "to great acclaim–Simpson analyzes the response to 9/11: the nationally syndicated "Portraits of Grief" obituaries in the "New York Times"; the debates over the rebuilding of the World Trade Center towers and the memorial design; the representation of American and Iraqi dead after the invasion of March 2003, along with the worldwide circulation of the Abu Ghraib torture photographs; and the urgent and largely ignored critique of homeland rhetoric from the domain of critical theory. Calling for a sustained cultural and theoretical analysis, "9/11" is the first book of its kind to consider the events of that tragic day with a perspective so firmly grounded in the humanities and so persuasive about the contribution they can make to our understanding of its consequences. |

The meaning of the Great Com mission was clear. To question it was to be disloyal. But within the last fewyears what was once a crusade has been transformed into a complicated and far-reach ing problem, bristling with questions which touch not only administration and methods of work, but the valid ity of the enterprise itself, and ultimately the funda mental assumptions of the Christian religion. What should be the primary aim of missions? What actually transpires in the heart of an Indian or an African when he comes under the influence of the gos pel? What is the relation be tween the divine and the human within Christianity it self? Has the Christian anything unique, absolute and final in his religion, or are we rather transmitting to the rest of the world the idealized and spiritualized aspects of our western culture? Sexual Nature/Sexual Culture $3.94 In this multidisciplinary study of human sexuality, an international team of scholars looks at the influences of nature and nurture, biology and culture, and sex and gender in the sexual experiences of humans and other primates. Using as its center the idea that sexual pleasure is the primary motivational force behind human sexuality and that reproduction is simply a byproduct of the pleasurability of sex, this book examines sexuality at the individual, societal, and cultural levels. Beginning with a look at the evolution of sexuality in humans and other primates, the essays in the first section examine the sexual ingenuity of primates, the dominant theories of sexual behavior, the differences in male and female sexual interest and behavior, and the role of physical attractiveness in mate selection. The focus then shifts to biological approaches to sexuality, especially the genetic and hormonal origins of sexual orientation, gender, and pleasure. The essays go on to look at the role of pleasure in different cultures. Included are essays on love among the tribespeople of the Brazilian rain forest and the regulation of adolescent sexuality in India. Finally, several contributors look at the methodological issues in the study of human sexuality, paying particular attention to the problems with research that relies on people’s memories of their sexual experiences. The contributors are Angela Pattatucci, Dean Hamer, David Greenberg, Frans de Waal, Mary McDonald Pavelka, Kim Wallen, Donald Symons, Heino Meyer-Bahlburg, Jean D. Wilson, Donald Tuzin, Lawrence Cohen, Thomas Gregor, Lenore Manderson, Robert C. Bailey, Alice Schlegel, Edward H. Kaplan, Richard Berk, Paul R. Abramson, Paul Okami, and Stephen D. Pinkerton. Spanning the chasm of the nature versus nurture debate, "Sexual Nature/Sexual Culture" is a look at human sexuality as a complex interaction of genetic potentials and cultural influences. This book will be of interest to a wide range of readers–from scholars and students in psychology, anthropology, sociology, and history to clinicians, researchers, and others seeking to understand the many dimensions of sexuality. "If we ever expect to solve the sexually based problems that modern societies face, we must encourage investigations of human sexual behavior. Moreover, those investigations should employ a broad range of disciplines–looking at sex from all angles, which is precisely what "Sexual Nature, Sexual Culture" does."–Mike May, "American Scientist" .,."This timely and relevant book reminds us that we cannot rely on simple solutions to complex problems. It represents a transdiciplinary approach integrating knowledge from diverse fields and provides the reader with a challenging and rewarding experience. Especially for those who are involved in teaching human sexuality to medical students and other health care professionals, this book is highly recommended."–Gerald Wiv |

Rugby Union in French Polynesia $70.1 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles Rugby union in French Polynesia, particularly in the main island of Tahiti, is a popular sport. Traditionally, matches tend to be held in the evening rather than the afternoon, due to the tropical climate. Because of this, Tahitian rugby organisers tend to put on entertainment during the day, to keep visiting rugby players etc happy. As with many Pacific Island nations, rugby is the main sport. Rugby came to Tahiti via three separate streams, firstly, through the visits of British, New Zealand and Australian sailors; secondly, through the French presence (many of the main teams are still French military); and thirdly through contact with neighbouring Pacific islands, where the game is popular. Much of the competition these days is informal, but like many French colonies, the connection with France is a mixed blessing. On the one hand, serious Tahitian players can go and work in the French leagues with ease, and earn a living there, but on the other, this causes a massive haemorrhaging of talent.
