Typee: A Peep at Polynesian Life $18.28 Almost from the time of its publication in 1846, Melville’s first book, based on his own travels in the South Seas, has been recognized as a classic in the literature of travel and adventure. Although initially rejected as too fantastic to be true, "Typee" was immensely popular and regarded in Melville’s lifetime as his best work. It established his reputation as the literary discoverer of the South Seas and inspired the likes of Jack London and Robert Louis Stevenson. Two common sailors jump ship and are held in benign captivity by Polynesian natives. Through the narrator’s eyes we see a literate (if romanticized) portrait of the people and their culture presented in vivid, even scientific, detail. Melville’s racy style and irreverence toward Christian missionaries caused a scandal, and critics denounced the narrator’s suggestion that the native life might be superior to that of modern civilization. An adventure story above all, albeit one with a philosophical bent, "Typee" is a combination of elements that even early in Melville’s career hinted at the towering ambition he would fulfill with "Moby-Dick." |

The Polynesian Rat originates in Southeast Asia but, like its cousins, has become well travelled infiltrating Fiji and most Polynesian islands, including New Zealand, Easter Island and Hawaii. It shares the ability to easily adapt to many different types of environments, from grasslands to forests. Its habits are also similar, becoming closely associated with humans because of the easy access to food. As a result it has become a major pest in almost all areas within its distribution. Easter Island $0.99 Learn about the history of Easter Island in South America with iMinds Travel’s insightful fast knowledge series. Easter Island lies 3,700 km, or 2,299 from the nearest continent and is one of the most isolated places on the planet. Though it is so far removed from the rest of the world, Easter Island has more than its fair share of local history. Also commonly known as Rapa Nui, the island is probably most famous for the giant statues called Moai that populate the island, mainly near the shores. Mystery surrounds these enormous monoliths and they continue to baffle archaeologists trying to piece together the story of the Island. Today, the small, peaceful looking island belies its bloody and difficult history. It is unknown exactly where the first islanders came from, but it is likely they arrived from another pacific island, such as the Marquesas, the Mangarevas, or even the Cook Islands. Estimates place their arrival at sometime in the eighth century. According to local oral history, the first settlers were led by the Polynesian King Hotu Matua in the year 450AD and landed on the north coast at Anakena. From there the numbers grew steadily and the land was cultivated. During this time the giant Moai were built and erected on their platforms, known as Ahu, along the coast.iMinds will tell you the story behind the place with its innovative travel series, transporting the armchair traveller or getting you in the mood for discover on route to your destination. iMinds brings targeted knowledge to your eReading device with short information segments to whet your mental appetite and broaden your mind. |

Chapters: Rapanui Politicians, Hotu Matu’a, Kings of Easter Island, King Nga’ara, Juan Edmunds Rapahango, Pedro Pablo Edmunds Paoa, Melania Carolina Hotu Hey. Not illustrated. Excerpt: Hotu Matu’a was the legendary first settler and ariki mau (“supreme chief” or “king”) of Easter Island. Hotu Matu’a and his two canoe (or one double hulled canoe) colonising party were Polynesians from the now unknown land of Hiva (probably the Marquesas). They landed at Anakena beach and his people spread out across the island, sub-divided it between clans claiming descent from his sons, and lived for more than a thousand years in their isolated island home at the southeastern tip of the Polynesian Triangle. Polynesians first came to Rapa Nui (later renamed Easter Island) sometime between 300 CE and 800 CE. These are the common elements of oral history that have been extracted from island legends. Linguistic, DNA and Pollen analysis all point to a Polynesian first settlement of the island at that time, but it is unlikely that other details can be verified. During this era the Polynesians were colonising islands across a vast expanse of the Pacific Ocean. Hotu Matua led his people from Hiva; linguistic analysis comparing Rapanui to other Polynesian languages suggests this was the Marquesas Islands. It is said that Hau-Maka had a dream in which his spirit travelled to a far country, to help look for new land for King Hotu Matu’a. In the dream, his spirit travelled to the Mata ki te Rangi (Eyes that look to the Sky). The island has also been called “Te Pito ‘o te Käinga”, which means “the Center of the Earth.” Both islands are commonly said to be Easter Island. When Hau-Maka woke, he told the King. The King then ordered seven men to travel to the island from Hiva (a myth… More: |

Serpent in Paradise $17 Lost in the surf of the South Pacific lies a speck of volcanic rock. Home to thirty-eight islanders—descendants of the Bounty mutineers—Pitcairn has no cars, no crime, no doctor, and no regular contact with the outside world. For two centuries, “Fletcher Christian’s children,” whose culture and language are a bizarre blend of Polynesian and eighteenth-century English, have lived out a unique social experiment.Acclaimed British travel writer and journalist Dea Birkett, obsessed like many with the island’s image as a secluded Eden and its connection to the mysterious and intriguing Bounty legend, traveled across the Pacific on a cargo ship and became one of the very few outsiders permitted to land on Pitcairn. Although the islanders initially seemed welcoming, they soon wove her into a web of decades-old disputes and thwarted desires. With no means of escape, Birkett’s adventure to the other side of nowhere at last became a kind of prison. |

Tattoo Road Trip Two Weeks in Samoa $11.99 A witty yet informative text, with lots of travel tips and pictures, focuses on the art of the tattoo that the authors found in this Pacific Island paradise. Join the adventure as these two take to the road at the very birthplace of Polynesian tattooing, beautiful Samoa. Armed with laptop and camera, Baxter and Clark documented their two-week odyssey from Apia to Saleapaga, and from thatched-roofed huts to the legendary mansion of Robert Louis Stevenson. The book displays this unspoiled home of turquoise reefs, volcanic beaches, misty green waterfalls, and vermilion sunsets, where hand-tapped tribal tattoos are still a normal form of body art and ritual. You will learn the local customs, meet legendary artists, and visit secluded beaches, including the secret coronation ceremony at Faleasela. White-knuckle surprises await you as Baxter and Clark take the back roads, eat fruit right off the tree, slog through rain forests, wade into coral-strewn tide pools, and suck up gallons of beer because it’s not a good idea to drink the water. You will even learn to tie a lavalava so it won’t fall off in the crosswalk! This entertaining trip to a jewel of the Pacific will confirm the belief that Polynesian life has it right, right down to the tattoos! |
