PortAventura Attractions

Living in the UK can leave you spoiled for choice on which attraction or theme park to visit. Alton Towers, Thorpe Park and Drayton Manor are some of the favourites amongst theme park goers and it’s easy to see why the tourism trade in the UK has grown so much over the past decade. However, more and more people are looking to sunnier locations for their thrilling getaways.

Orlando Florida is a top location for tourists with the combination of sun and fun, but tickets for this destination can be expensive, meaning some families have to save up for years, even if it’s just for a week. However, there are parks nearer to home which can save you money but offer the same thrills. PortAventura is a theme park located on the Golden Coast in Spain, right next to the Mediterranean and is fast becoming one of the most popular attractions in Europe.

The park opened in 1995 and has gone through various hands of ownership since then, growing in size through each predecessor. The park is split into 5 worlds, each offering its own environment inspired by locations from around the globe.

The first world you will enter is Mediterrania and is quite fitting for the Spanish theme park. This area offers a number of restaurants and shops styled as a typical coastal town in Catalonia as well as 2 rides; Furrius Baco, a rollercoaster which opened in 2007, reaching a top speed of 84mph, claiming to be the fastest rollercoaster in Europe. For something more sedate, a boart ride takes visitors from this area to the Chinese area.

The Chinese area is home to the largest ride in the park; the Dragon Khan. This rollercoaster comes with 8 inversions and the tallest vertical loop than any other rollercoaster in Europe. Other rides include the Cobra Imperial, Tea Cups and Fumanchu. If you’re feeling a little peckish during your excursions, you may want to visit the Chinese buffet , Marco Polo.

The Mexico area isn’t too dissimilar from the Far West, but you will have more choice of rides here including the Templo Del Fuego, El Diablo-Tren de la Mina and the Hurakan Condor which is the largest freefall ride in the world at 330ft and features tilting seats to make the ride even more thrilling.

The Polynesia area is for the more chilled out guests and is one of the smaller areas in PortAventura. When you have had your fill of thrilling rides, this is the place to go to unwind and relax. Rides include the Tutuki Splash and the Sea Odyssey, a ride taking guests to the depths of the sea in a submarine simulation.

SesamoAventura is a Sesame street themed area featuring all the familiar characters, this area of the park is more suited to the younger guests.

PortAventura is continuously growing each year, making it a popular attraction for returning visitors. Keep your eyes open for what’s coming in 2012, with the possibility of a new rides and attractions.

Tourism and Tourism Spaces

Tourism and Tourism Spaces

$41.65

This is a critical introduction to the relations between tourism, tourists, and tourism spaces. It fuses economic and cultural perspectives to explain how tourism is dependent on place and space, while at the same time as defining those places and spaces. Cultural Tourism

Cultural Tourism

$66.63

Examine cultural tourism issues from both sides of the industry Unique in concept and content, Cultural Tourism: The Partnership Between Tourism and Cultural Heritage Management examines the relationship between the sectors that represent opposite sides of the cultural tourism coin. While tourism professionals assess cultural assets for their profit potential, cultural heritage professionals judge the same assets for their intrinsic value. Sustainable cultural tourism can only occur when the two sides form a true partnership based on understanding and appreciation of each other’s merits. The authors–one, a tourism specialist, the other, a cultural heritage management expert–present a model for a working partnership with mutual benefits, integrating management theory and practice from both disciplines.Cultural Tourism is the first book to combine the different perspectives of tourism management and cultural heritage management. It examines the role of tangible (physical evidence of culture) and intangible (continuing cultural practices, knowledge, and living experiences) heritage, describes the differences between cultural tourism products and cultural heritage assets, and develops a number of conceptual models, including a classification system for cultural tourists, indicators of tourism potential at cultural and heritage assets, and assessment criteria for cultural and heritage assets with tourism potential. Cultural Tourism examines the five main constituent elements involved in cultural tourism: cultural and heritage assets in tourism sites such as the Royal Palace in Bangkok, the Cook Islands, and Alcatraz Prison in San Francisco. tourism–what it is, how it works, and what makes it a success five different types of cultural tourists consumption of products, value adding, and commodification integrating the first four elements to satisfy the tourist, meet the needs of the tourism industry, and conserve the intrinsic value of the assetThough tourism and cultural heritage management professionals have mutual interests in the management, conservation, and presentation of cultural and heritage assets, the two sectors operate on parallel planes, maintaining an uneasy partnership with surprisingly little dialogue. Cultural Tourism provides professionals and students in each field with a better understanding of their own roles in the partnership, bridging the gap via sound planning, management, and marketing to produce top-quality, long-lasting cultural tourism products. Now translated into simplified Chinese.

This book offers an integrated account of the problems and opportunities this migration of people present for nature and communities. The second edition of Environment and Tourism reflects changes in the relationship between tourism, society and the natural environment in the first decade of the new century. Alongside the updating of all statistics, environmental policy initiatives, examples and case studies new material has been added. This includes two new chapters: one on climate change and natural disasters; and the other on the relationship between tourism and poverty. These themes have direct relevance not only to tourism but are reflective of the wider relationship between nature and society, a thesis that contextualises the book. Tourism is also analysed as an interconnected system, linking the environments of where tourists come from, with the ones they go to. Further issues addressed in the book include tourism’s interaction with nature; economic opportunities for conservation; market failure that causes tourism to create environmental problems; environmental management and planning for tourism; environmental ethics; sustainable tourism and ecotourism; poverty and tourism; climate change, natural disasters and tourism. The book is original in taking a holistic view of the tourism system and how it interacts with the natural environment, illustrating the positive and negative effects of this relationship, and importantly how tourism can be planned and managed to encourage natural resource conservation and aid human development. It will be useful to those studying Human Geography, Tourism and Environment Studies.

Mapping Tourism

Mapping Tourism

$3.94

At first glance, the relationships among tourists, tourism maps, and the spaces of tourism seem straightforward enough: tourists use maps to find their way to and through the sites of history, culture, nature, or recreation represented there. Less apparent is how tourism maps and those using them construct such spaces and identities. As the essays in Mapping Tourism clearly demonstrate, the extraordinary interaction of work with leisure and the everyday with the exotic makes tourism maps ideal sites for exploring the contested construction of place and identity. Construction sites in the "New Berlin, " Alabama’s civil rights trail, Quebec City, a California ghost town, and Bangkok’s sex trade are among the spaces the essays examined. Taken together, these essays allow us to see tourist space as it truly is: contested, ever changing, and replete with issues of power.

$28.93

""From Kosher Oreos to the gentrification of Mexican cusine, from the charismatic cook of Basque communities in Spain and the United States to the mainstreaming of southwestern foodways, Culinary Tourism maps a lively cultural and intellectual terrain."" — from the foreword by Barbara Kirshenblatt-GimblettCulinary Tourism is the first book to consider food as both a destination and a means for tourism. The book’s contributors examine the many intersections of food, culture and tourism in public and commercial contexts, in private and domestic settings, and around the world. The contributors argue that the sensory experience of eating provides people with a unique means of communication. Editor Lucy Long contends that although the interest in experiencing ""otherness"" is strong within American society, total immersion into the unfamiliar is not always welcome. Thus spicy flavors of Latin Aermcia and the exotic ingredients of Asia have been mainstreamed for everyday consumption. Culinary Tourism explains how and why interest in foreign food is expanding tastes and leading to commercial profit in America, but the book also show how tourism combines personal experiences with cultural and social attitudes toward food and the circumstances for adventurous eating.

The Impact of Culture on Tourism

The Impact of Culture on Tourism

$40.85

Cultural tourism is one of the largest and fastest-growing global tourism markets. Culture and creative industries are increasingly being used to promote destinations and enhance their competitiveness and attractiveness. Many locations are now actively developing their tangible and intangible cultural assets as a means of developing comparative advantages in an increasingly competitive tourism marketplace, and to create local distinctiveness in the face of globalisation. The Impact of Culture on Tourism examines the growing relationship between tourism and culture, and the way in which they have together become major drivers of destination attractiveness and competitiveness. Based on recent case studies that illustrate the different facets of the relationship between tourism, culture and regional attractiveness, and the policy interventions which can be taken to enhance the relationship, this publication shows how a strong link between tourism and culture can be fostered to help places become more attractive to tourists, as well as increasing their competitiveness as locations to live, visit, work and invest in. The book is essential reading for academics, national and local policy makers and practitioners and all those in the tourism sector who wish to understand the relationship between culture, tourism and destination attractiveness.

Sustainability Assessment for Tourism Destinations

Sustainability Assessment for Tourism Destinations

$138.61

In recent years tourism researchers have acknowledged the necessity to view and assess tourism destinations as complex adaptive systems (CASs), and have discussed the unpredictability of these systems. CASs approaches, which have been successfully applied by ecologists and economists in other areas, are indicated for tourism management, but have been rarely used in order to promote sustainable tourism development and planning. Appropriate methodologies and frameworks for the implementation of CASs approaches into the tourism context are still lacking. This book analyses the potential of a CASs approach based on system dynamics modelling to add value to the currently used assessment tools and monitoring practices for tourism sustainability in an effort to advance sustainable development in tourism destinations. It is argued here that new concepts and assessment tools for sustainable tourism are needed based on collective learning processes and adaptive management practices that acknowledge the complex and dynamic nature of tourism. Why are we so intrigued by ‘lost’ places, such as Tutankhamun’s tomb or Machu Picchu, South America’s lost city of the Incas? What is the relationship between art, tourism and landscape preference? What role did commercial tourist photographers play in the imagination of Victorian Britain? Drawing upon examples from across the globe, this exciting new contribution to a popular subject illustrates how tourism and visual culture intersect with one another and in the process become contested ground.

Food Culture in the Pacific Islands

Food Culture in the Pacific Islands

$49.95

The food culture of the Pacific Islands has been determined by isolation from the rest of the world. Original immigrants from Asia brought their foods, animals, and culinary skills with them, then for several thousand years, they were largely uninfluenced by outsiders. The tropical climate of much of the region, unique island geology and environmental factors also played a role in the evolution of islander cuisine, which is based on unique ingredients. The staples of breadfruit, yams, taro, coconut, sweet potato, and cassava are incorporated into a cuisine that uses cooking and preservation techniques unique to Polynesia, Micronesia, and Melanesia. Today, food culture in the Pacific is largely one of extremes. Although traditional foods and cookery survive and are highly valued, Westernization has meant that the overall diet of islanders has been negatively transformed and that islands are net importers of unhealthful foods. Ironically, the tourism industry has re-engaged islander people in food production and boosted their sense of identity. Students, food mavens, and travellers will find this to be a stellar introduction to the current culture of the Pacific Islands, with discussion of Hawaii, Australia, and New Zealand included.Chapter 1, Historical Overview, offers a fascinating chronicle of the evolution of a food culture of extremes, of isolation, climate, environment, and Western influences. Chapter 2, Major Foods and Ingredients, introduces a host of traditional tropical manna as well as imported products. The Cooking chapter discusses the truly unique cooking styles of the islands, such as steam-baking in the ground in an umu (oven). Chapter 4, Typical Meals, largely explores the emphasis on the ubiquitous processed foods. A Regional Specialties chapter reveals both pan-regional dishes and the noted local dishes. Chapter 6′s Eating Out discussion shows the new acceptance of the individualist, recreational ritual of eating away from the community. The

The “Tahiti” that most people imagine-white-sand beaches, turquoise lagoons, and beautiful women-is a product of 18th century European romanticism and persists today to serve as the bedrock of Tahiti’s tourism industry. This postcard image, however, masks a different, less known reality. French Polynesia remains a colony of France in the 21st century and was the site of France’s nuclear testing program for nearly thirty years. The dreams and desires, which the tourism industry promotes, distract from the medical nightmares and environmental destruction caused by nuclear testing. Tahitians see the burying of a bomb in their land as deeply offensive. For them, the land abounds with ancestral fertility and genealogical identity, providing them with a constant source of both physical and spiritual nourishment. The imagined and lived perspectives of Tahiti seem incompatible, yet are intricately intertwined in the political economy of French Polynesia.Tahiti Beyond the Postcard engages with questions about the subtle but ubiquitous ways in which power entangles itself in place-related ways. How does colonialism perpetuate and exploit these images? How can nuclear weapons testing exist in a place that is promoted as a pristine paradise? How and why is “Tahiti” crafted by a tourism industry whose goal is to create desire? How is this imagined product embraced, ignored, or sabotaged by Tahitians? Miriam Kahn uses interpretive frameworks of both Tahitian and European scholars, drawing upon ethnographic details that include ancient chants, picture postcards, antinuclear protests, popular song lyrics, and the legacy of Paul Gauguin’s art, to provide fresh perspectives on colonialism, tourism, imagery, and the anthropology of place. Miriam Kahn is professor of anthropology at the University of Washington and author of Always Hungry, Never Greedy: Food and the Expression of Gender in a Melanesian Society and coauthor of Pacific Voices:

Excerpt: Papeete (“water from a basket”, see footnote for variant spelling) (pronounced ) is the capital of French Polynesia, an overseas collectivity of France in the Pacific Ocean. The commune (municipality) of Papeete is located on the island of Tahiti, in the administrative subdivision of the Windward Islands, of which Papeete is the administrative capital. The French High Commissioner also resides in Papeete. It is the primary center of Tahitian and French Polynesian public and private governmental, commercial, industrial and financial services, the hub of French Polynesian tourism and a commonly used Port of call. The Windward Islands are themselves part of the Society Islands. The urban area of Papeete had a total population of 131,695 inhabitants at the August 2007 census, 26,017 of whom lived in the commune of Papeete proper. The growth of the city was boosted by the decision to move the nuclear weapon test range from Algeria to the atolls of Mururoa and Fangataufa, some 1,500 km (930 mi) at the east of Tahiti; this originated in particular in the construction of the Faa’a airport next to Pape’ete, the only international airport in French Polynesia. In 1983, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints built the Papeete Tahiti Temple here because of the large number of members in the region. On 5 September 1995 the government of Jacques Chirac conducted the first of the last series of nuclear test detonations off the shores of Moruroa. A resulting riot in Papeete lasted for two days and damaged the international airport, injured 40 people, and scared away tourism for some time.(Similar rioting occurred after another French nuclear test in the same area in 1987). Waltzing with Brando is the story of a young Los Angeles architect who found himself, quite unexpectedly, living on an unpopulated atoll in the South Pacific with his client, Marlon Brando. Bernard Judge recounts his life changing experience while discovering the culture of Polynesia and Tahiti in the early 70′s, before mass tourism, electrification and the automobile changed everything. The book is filled with amusing anecdotes about his famous client. It exposes Marlon Brando the man, not the actor, his foibles and eccentricities and regales the reader with Brando’s ridiculous exploits with women. It is also a narrative about Tetiaroa, Brandon’s private atoll, about living in nature without despoiling the environment. Questions are asked. Should a hotel be built? What are the consequences? It tells of how Brando and his architect came to an understanding, an appreciation for the atoll’s archeology, its ecology, and the interdependence of its marine life, sea birds and nesting turtle grounds. It is an unusual convergence of adventure, of reaching for a dream, and a compelling love story richly told and illustrated with beautiful historic photographs of the period.
